Amanda Hamer from Daydream Creative is a volunteer at ‘2SSR Sound of the Sutherland Shire’ Community Radio Station!
Earlier this year Amanda took on the volunteer role of ‘Website Officer’ at the radio station and has recently rebranded their logo, with the website redesign being next in her sights.
Their old logo was a bit tired and everyone acknowledge it would benefit from a revamp. It did not really showcase the brand as a radio station, if you did not read the channel numbers you could completely miss it.
Amanda had the challenge of redesigning the logo with more emphasis on the station channel 99.7FM.
As the radio station is run by volunteers there is not a huge budget to do a total rebrand and update everywhere the logo appears, there is simply not the funding. Therefore Amanda was mindful to keep some elements of the existing branding so listeners would still recognise the logo as it is slowly phased in.
While a little abstract and simplified, the old logo included graphics depicting the Sutherland Shire of a wave, sun and a palm tree. Amanda ensured that these elements would be shown in the new logo.
Amanda developed the concept of using an illustrated, modern microphone as the station icon.
She researched different microphones used in radio over the years and sketched different shapes and sizes before deciding on the final overall shape.
The existing brand colours were blues with the added splashes of green and yellow thrown in. Amanda worked with these colours to once again keep some brand consistency carried on from the original logo.
The typography needed to be bold so the station channel 99.7fm really stood out and was very readable. After trialing a number of fonts the chosen one was decided as it was bold but with a modern and playful twist!
The microphone, designed elements of the sun, wave and palm tree, plus the typography was then composed together digitally. And after some reviews and a variety of versions the new logo was born!
Everyone at the radio station was very pleased with the new logo and it is starting to be phased in on all new material.
